Youth Unemployment Figure Tops One Million
The figure for youth unemployment has now reached the one million mark, due to a rise of 250,000 more people being declared unemployed in July ’09.
This figure marks a landmark high and means that around 17% of all 18 to 24 year olds are out of work and looking for a job. Depressingly, a third of these are school leavers who are just starting out in their working life and as colleges and Universities finally close for the summer the figure looks set to increase as students and graduates finish their courses and start looking for job vacancies.
The UK’s total unemployment figure is expected to peak at 3 million next year and a recent report by KPMG has revealed that only 24% of employers plan to hire more staff over the coming months.
