Yesterday’s announcement by the Met Office that it was to revise its summer forecast of a “BBQ Summer” to one with more rainfall and lower temperatures was met with mixed feelings by UK businesses.
Some UK businesses, which rely on the summer being warm and sunny, could really face a huge financial strain, as consumers yet again avoid holidaying in the UK, buying garden furniture, having barbecues and paying for other outdoor luxuries.
The UK tourism industry had planned for a bumper year of UK bookings, but holiday makers are now swarming the internet and brances of their local travel agents to grab a bargain trip abroad.
On a serious note, this revised forecast can really affect businesses who are reliant on a warm summer. Many plan ahead, recruiting more staff and bringing in more stock to cope with demand. When the demand doesn’t arrive jobs are lost as cash is tied up and not turned in to profit.
Travel Agents, airlines and airports are likely to be the ones to reap the rewards of another wet summer, as holiday makers decide not to risk taking their annual holiday in Britain.
