The main reason many of us look to find a new job is because we are unhappy in the position we already have. Maybe it’s a bad boss, poor pay or lack of career progression. For many of us, simply getting out of bed in the morning ready to face a long hard day at work can be a real struggle. So, what do you do if you are stuck in a rut like this? Well, you job hunt. You focus on securing a new job, a fresh career and hopefully a change in your whole outlook.
But where such people really fall down is during the job interview. When asked their reasons for leaving their current position the interviewer is often presented with a whole list of unsuitable (but totally honest) answers! For instance, “I hate my boss” may be the reason you want to leave your job, but it should never be the answer you give to an interviewer! Why? Well, because it puts you in a negative light; you look like a negative person unable to take authority or get along with your peers.
Focus on the positives during an interview (even if there are only a few) and spin your answers in a more professional manner. Answers like “I want to improve my career prospects” or “I really want a fresh challenge and feel I am capable of achieving great things for your organisation” are much better than negative answers. So, when in an interview look to the positive future, not the negative past and you will have a much better chance of securing that dream job. Good luck!
