As the tough economic conditions continue to bite, UK graduates are facing challenging times as they leave university. According to the Higher Education Careers Service Unit, around a third of new graduates are either on the dole or working in low-paid, low skilled jobs just 6 months after leaving higher education. This is an increase of 8% from 2008.
Graduate positions are also becoming much scarcer, with many finding themselves securing roles they are completely over qualified (and would have likely secured after completing there A ‘Levels). Experts are now predicting graduate unemployment could reach a quarter in the very near term. Figures quoted by the country’s top 100 graduate employers have revealed that a staggering 45 applications are received for each single graduate job vacancy. With competition like this it is highly likely that the applicant will receive a number of rejection letters before securing their first step on the career ladder.
