Drastic Cuts mean Heavy Job Losses in Scotland

by admin on June 7, 2010

As the new coalition government attempts to reduce the UK’s budget deficit it seems we are all waiting with baited breath to hear where cuts in spending will occur. Well, today it seems that Scottish workers in the public sector are bearing the brunt of these early cuts. It has emerged that around 30,000 public sector jobs will be cut in the next four years. A percentage of these jobs will not be renewed as staff retire or optionally leave their posts. However, many staff will be facing the prospect of compulsory redundancy.

The employment situation in Scotland appears bleak with unemployment expected to hit around the 200,000 mark, compared to around 105,000 before the recession started two years ago.

In addition to the public sector, Scotland also faces job losses in the construction and manufacturing industries in particular.
