Councils set to Cut up to 25,000 Jobs in England

by admin on March 2, 2010

It’s bad news for councils workers throughout England as it has been revealed from a survey conducted by the BBC that councils across the country need to make big job cuts in a bid to save money. Local government is the UK’s biggest employer, with around 2 million people working in jobs with the council.
The BBC contacted all the councils across the country and 49 responded, indicating that cuts of up to 10% of their workforce would be needed. This is bleak news, but consider this – if ALL the councils in England cut their staff numbers by 10% the number of total job losses could be a staggering 256,000.
It is feared that sectors to be hit the hardest will have a direct affect on the people who currently use them, primarily the very young and the elderly. Councils across the country are considering cutting back on provisions for the young, council run nurseries, libraries and clubs etc. The elderly will be affected if plans to close state owned care homes are pushed through.
The jobs cuts are expected to be made within the next five years.
