Battle of the Supermarkets Hots Up in Yorkshire

Tesco has long been known for its aggressive expansion plans and appears to fear no rivals. For many retailers, the thought of opening a supermarket within spitting distance of a major Asda store would be enough to give them nightmares. However, this does not appear to be the case with Tesco who have recently applied to open a store just yards from their closest rival.

The site is in Hull and if the plans are passed the store will open its doors directly across the road from Asda in the east of the city. This would bring Tesco’s tally of stores to 12 in Hull alone. This will be a large store, some 110,000 square feet in size and it would bring a welcome jobs boost to the area. According to the plans there would be over 400 new jobs with Tesco in the town. Asda currently employs 391 staff at the Holderness Rd store.

And the story does not end here. Tesco are also waiting to hear whether their application to open a store in the west of the city has been successful. Asda has much fewer outlets in the area, with just 4 at present.
