BAE Systems has today revealed that it plans to axe 1116 jobs in the North West of England. The job loses will arise as a result of the closure of the Woodford site. The site will cease to operate from 2012. This is when the aircraft manufacturer expects to have completed the production of the RAF Nimrod aircraft.
The closure will not come as a surprise to workers, as it has been in the pipeline for some years. However, the announcement that the site will now definately close will still come as a blow to many, especially in these tines of recession. Job hunters are chasing a limited number of job vacancies and with over 1000 local jobs lost, competition for new vacancies will be feirce.
