Tesco, the UK’s number one retailer has high growth ambitions, but before it can challenge Wal-Mart’s global domination of the retail food market it needs to crack one lucrative market – the USA.

Having taken years to research the market and develop the brand, Tesco decided to launch its stores in the USA under a completely new name, Fresh&Easy. It selected Los Angeles, California as its base and also opened up a vast warehouse and ready-meal factory in Segundo, to the east of LA.

Fresh&Easy now operate around 100 stores across the Eastern side of the United States, and further expansion is planned (however, plans are being slowed down due to the current economic downturn). Fresh & Easy stores are physically smaller than some other US supermarkets and are designed to have a “neighbourhood convenience” feel to them. The chain focuses on selling fresh food and own label groceries and has sought to avoid competing in the already saturated convenience food market. As with Tesco, Fresh & Easy offer “everyday low prices”, which are on average 15% cheaper than American consumers were used to paying.
